Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Monday morning that he and six other Senators have wrapped up a previously unannounced trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Kentucky Republican was joined by four Republican Senators who were sworn into office earlier this month: Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Pat Toomey (Pa.).

Veteran GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Richard Burr (N.C.) also accompanied the Minority Leader on the trip. Graham and Burr are both members of the Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs committees.

According to a statement issued by McConnell’s office, the Senators met with U.S. troops, military officials and political leaders for discussions on political, economic and security matters. Additionally, each Member made a point to visit troops from their respective states.

The Senators also met with Army Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan; Afghan President Hamid Karzai; Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir of Pakistan; and Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Pakistan’s military chief.

The delegation is scheduled to return to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.
