Larson Holds Off Staff Resignations Pending Budget Info

The expected mass staff exodus in Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson’s office didn’t happen Monday.

While Larson had asked his district, personal and caucus office staffs in late November to submit their resignations effective Dec. 13, the Connecticut Democrat has held off on making any final personnel decisions for the 112th Congress.

“Until we have the budget, the chairman is holding off on making final staffing decisions,” Larson spokeswoman Emily Barocas said.

Larson took the unusual step of asking all staff to resign to give him more flexibility in preparing for a slashed operating budget in the minority. So far, it is unclear what budget levels Democrats will have to work with. Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said that he wants to cut House operating budgets by 5 percent. Democrats in leadership will further feel the pinch because they recently added another leadership position, the No. 3 spot, for Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.).
