The betting has been fast but not too furious in recent weeks, with regional eats remaining the preferred currency of these soft-core scofflaws.
The latest wager includes not one, not two, but four Senators, who have pooled their resources to spice up the nascent St. Louis Cardinals-Texas Rangers World Series. In a rare show of bipartisanship, Missouri Sens. Roy Blunt (R) and Claire McCaskill (D) are united behind the Cardinals, pitting an undetermined amount of Ted Drewes frozen custard against the Blue Bell ice cream — birthday cake and banana pudding are our faves — dangled by Texas GOP Sens. John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison.
This past weekend, New York Democratic Reps. Kathy Hochul and Steve Israel fed an intrastate rivalry by betting buffalo wings from Duff’s Famous Wings against authentic Long Island pizza from Deer Hills Pizzeria on the Buffalo Bills-N.Y. Giants game. (Israel is owed some wings.)
Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) got the ball rolling by putting up fruit preserves against maple syrup during the American League Division Series. The Detroit Tigers clinched it, putting Schumer on the hook for some sugary sap.
