Capitol Lens: Presidential Penmanship

Courtesy Library of Congress

The Library of Congress puts historical photos at the public’s fingertips via its online catalog. Nearly three-quarters of a century ago, Jeanne Thompson, 20, was appointed as secretary to the president for signing land grants and patents at the General Land Office. She’s shown on Sept. 8, 1937, in the early days of her job, where she was authorized to affix ‘Franklin D. Roosevelt’ to documents.
