Capitol Lens: The Pomp of the Past

Courtesy Library of Congress

Crowds lined the route for a Columbus Day parade past Union Station in Washington, D.C., in 1912. You don’t see such celebrations for the holiday today, and many people don’t even get the day off from work. The holiday used to be a big deal, but people don’t give much thought to it now.
