Actor Brandon Routh came to Capitol Hill on Tuesday on behalf of the group Voices for National Service. HOH hears Routh, star of the 2006 flick “Superman Returns,” appeared alongside Rep. Doris Matsui at a lunch sponsored by the Congressional Service Caucus, of which the California Democrat is a co-chairwoman. The lunch featured author Shirley Sagawa, who discussed her service-themed book, “The American Way to Change.”
Routh also presented Sen. Tom Harkin with the group’s Edward M. Kennedy National Service Lifetime Leadership Award, recognizing the Iowa Democrat for his support of national service programs. Harkin said he was touched to receive an honor “named for one of my dearest friends and role models,” adding that it also was special to get the award from Routh, who hails from the Hawkeye State.
“He is someone I am proud to call a fellow Iowan — he plays a great Superman, but he also makes a great everyman, and I have the greatest respect for his sustained advocacy for national service programs in recent years,” Harkin said.
