Tourists Say Capitol Officers Should Be Able To Wear Shorts on Job

File Photo
Union representatives say the shorts ban for officers assigned to the Capitol is based on appearances — because shorts-clad officers don’t look good carrying large automatic rifles.

While walking into the Capitol Visitor Center, Kay Ziegler of Lewiston, Minn., pointed out that postal workers wear shorts in the summer. She asked her group of friends to vote on the ban.

“All those in favor of shorts?” Ziegler asked.

The three other women, all wearing shorts, raised their hands.
