Heard on the Hill: Gingrich’s Expensive Jewelry Debt Debacle

When GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s half-million dollar Tiffany’s credit problem was outed, Vincent Morris, communication director for Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), could say he was there from its inception.

Reports surfaced Tuesday that the former Speaker had carried as much as $500,000 dollars in debt to the New York-based jewelry store, but this may not have always been the case.

In 2000, Morris, then a reporter for the New York Post, wrote an article about Gingrich’s engagement and marriage to his current wife, Callista.

Morris reported 11 years ago: “The two were spotted in December shopping for wedding rings at Tiffany’s, where one observer said she thought Gingrich ‘was surprised by the price.’”

When Morris was reached for comment Wednesday morning, he laughed. He told HOH that he had been waiting for someone to call him out on his Gingrich connection.

“I did a double take when I read the story,” Morris said. “It’s nice to see that Newt is a gift that keeps on giving. He’s timeless, like a $250,000 sterling silver serving dish from Tiffany’s.”

Boom, Mr. Gingrich. You’ve been roasted.
