Pundit Joins Mass. Democratic Senate Primary Crowd

It is supposed to be among Democrats’ best pickup opportunities in the nation next year, but the Democratic field lining up against Sen. Scott Brown (R) appears to be growing murkier and more crowded by the day.

With four candidates already competing in the Democratic primary, state-lawmaker-turned-TV-pundit Warren Tolman is considering jumping in as well. He told the Boston Globe that he’s being “encouraged to think about it by a lot of people.”

“I think there’s some people who think I would be a good candidate and add something to the mix, and I think there’s some people who look at the incumbent and think I could do better,” Tolman told the Globe.

Tolman served in the state House for much of the 1990s but hasn’t held elected office since 1999, despite an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 2002. He is best known now for a role as political commentator on Boston’s local Fox affiliate.

The Democratic field already includes Newton Mayor Setti Warren, City Year co-founder Alan Khazei, Democratic activist Bob Massie and Salem immigration attorney Marisa DeFranco. State Rep. Thomas Conroy is also testing the waters, Hotline On Call reported Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama will be in Massachusetts fundraising this week. On Wednesday night, he will speak at a fundraiser at the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts. The event will raise money for the Democratic National Committee and for the Obama re-election campaign.

It’s his second fundraiser in Boston since March.
