Gossip Girl has a crush on Sen. Charles Schumer. The teeny-bopper show, which follows the tumultuous lives and loves of Manhattans elite teens, dropped a reference to the New York Democrat in Monday nights episode marking at least the second time the Big Apple-set show has mentioned the home-state Senator.
The latest Schumer name-dropping happened during a scene that takes place at a fancy political victory party in which one of the main characters, the witchy Blair
Waldorf, is insulting the date of her BFF (that means best friend forever, oldsters), Serena van der Woodsen.
The young gentleman in question is visibly drunk at the VIP-filled party, and Blair snaps, He thought Sen. Schumer was his father!
In an episode last year, Serena referred to an incident from the girls childhood in which Blair tackled Schumers daughter at a Yale football game.
It seems Schumers name is recognizable enough to be a pop-culture reference to the shows youthful audience. And apparently, the attention is giving him a boost with some key constituents.
All these name drops are helping to improve Sen. Schumers image with two of his toughest critics his daughters, spokesman Brian Fallon says.
Maybe now that the show is taking on a political theme (one of the characters was improbably elected to Congress at the tender age of 26), viewers will be hearing more references to Members of Congress than handbag designers.
But we wont hold our breath.
Limited Edition. Sen. James Inhofe received a rare distinction on Tuesday normally reserved for ballplayers such as Derek Jeter, Ryan Howard or even Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.): his own trading card.
But this one doesnt honor Inhofes stellar batting average or number of homers. Instead, the cards creator, the National Wildlife Federation, mocks the Oklahoma Republican for being the most valuable player of the Big Oil All-Stars.
Its World Series season, and baseballs in the air, NWF spokesman Jeremy Symons told HOH. And I have to say, theres so much he has to offer, it was hard to pick which statistics to put on the back of the card.
Symons said the card is inspired in part by a legislative scorecard put out by the American Petroleum Institute granting Inhofe a perfect score. Stats featured on the card include Money Taken From Oil & Gas Industry and a list of energy bills Inhofe has voted against.
Sen. Inhofe cemented his status as the MVP of the Big Oil All-Stars when he called global warming the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people on the Senate floor in 2003, the card reads. He has improved his oil industry contribution yield each cycle, finishing among the league leaders in 2008.
An Inhofe spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment. But Symons cautioned that other Senators with ties to Team Big Oil could wind up with their own card. Trading cards come in sets, he noted.
Roll Call Family Matters. Its a boy for Geof Koss, a reporter for Congressional Quarterly and veteran of the Roll Call family, and his wife, Department of Justice attorney Jennifer Daskal. Little Zachary Orion Daskal-Koss was born Monday to the proud couple.
Dad took a break from covering skirmishes on the Hill to report much happier news: Mom and baby are great, and hes cultivating a new skill. Im busy learning the art of diapering, he tells us.
A very warm HOH congrats!
Overheard on the Hill. Makes me so proud. The last line is the most impressive stat. God bless America.
A tweet posted by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), linking to an article about a group of people who broke the Guinness world record for vegetable chucking by launching a pumpkin 4,623 feet at the Pumpkin Chuckin Festival in Moab, Utah. The veggie traveled more than 700 mph in its record-shattering feat.
