The National Gallery of Art announced that it has commissioned a work by artist Roxy Paine for its outdoor sculpture garden.
Titled Graft, the piece will be the newest addition to a line of tree-like sculptures known as dendroids that have become icons of Paines style.
According to the National Gallery of Art, the Graft dendroid will branch off into two limbs one smooth and streamlined, one contorted and tangled that are intended to evoke the ever-present tension between nature and chaos.
Graft will be the first new piece of modern sculpture added to the sculpture garden since it opened in 1999. Molly Donovan, the gallerys associate curator of modern and contemporary art, said the staff is pleased to feature Paines work.
Hes been at the top of our wish list for quite some time now, she wrote in an e-mail.
Paines work has also appeared in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and the De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art in the Netherlands.
