Republican Roster

June 17, 2009, 12 a.m.

Rep. Gresham Barrett (S.C.)
Catcher
Elected 2002
Home: Westminster
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

After wearing a uniform from the University of South Carolina last year, Barrett this year will sport the jersey of Anderson University. But the number will be the same: 14. Barrett’s days of playing in the game are numbered, as he’s running for governor in 2010.

Rep. Joe Barton (Texas)
Manager
Elected 1984
Home: Ennis
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Barton has a laid-back style, but it seems to work, as he’s already 2-0 as the Republicans’ manager. Barton’s district includes the city of Arlington, Texas, home of the Texas Rangers baseball club. So it’s fitting that he’ll be wearing a Rangers uniform with No. 6 on the back.

Rep. Kevin Brady (Texas)
Second Base
Elected 1996
Home: The Woodlands
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Brady, a scrappy former University of South Dakota center fielder, continues to be a key member of the team, a fixture at second base who has batted leadoff in each of the past four games. He’ll be wearing No. 8 on the uniform of Lone Star College at tonight’s game.

Rep. Steve Buyer (Ind.)
Coach
Elected 1992
Home: Monticello
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Despite Democrats’ best efforts to beat him in 2008, Buyer will be on the sidelines for the third straight year as a valued coach for Manager Joe Barton. Once again, he is wearing No. 15 in an Indiana University uniform.

Rep. Mike Conaway (Texas)
First Base
Elected 2004
Home: Midland
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Although he was on the Republican roster, Conaway didn’t play last year, but the former high school football standout will be ready, just in case. Conaway is an old friend of a man who knows a thing or two about baseball: George W. Bush. He’ll wear No. 11 from Angelo State University.

Sen. John Ensign (Nev.)
Pitcher/Shortstop
Elected 2000
Home: Las Vegas
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

The versatile Ensign, one of the most athletic people on the team, played four positions in last year’s game, including the final inning as a pitcher. The lone Senator on the GOP roster will sport No. 37 in a University of Nevada at Las Vegas uniform.

Rep. Jeff Flake (Ariz.)
Outfield
Elected 2000
Home: Mesa
Hits L | Throws R | Votes R

Every year, Flake, the starting center fielder on last year’s squad, wears lucky No. 13 in an Arizona Diamondbacks uniform.

Rep. John Fleming (La.)
Second Base
Elected 2008
Home: Minden
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Fleming, a physician, is making his Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game debut after winning a close election last December. He’ll wear a No. 4 jersey from Northwestern State University.

Rep. Phil Gingrey (Ga.)
Outfield
Elected 2002
Home: Marietta
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

The oldest player on the GOP squad at age 66, Gingrey reached base during his lone plate appearance last year and scored a run. He’ll be wearing No. 11 in a uniform from Marietta High School — fitting for a man who once served on the Marietta school board.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (Texas)
Outfield
Elected 2004
Home: Tyler
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Gohmert scored a run in the GOP’s one-run victory over the Democrats last year. A former judge, Gohmert will once again be wearing a Houston Astros jersey with No. 1 on the back.

Rep. Sam Graves (Mo.)
Outfield
Elected 2000
Home: Tarkio
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Graves has stolen two bases in each of the two games he’s played, and last year he also scored two runs. Although listed as an outfielder, he could wind up just about anywhere on the diamond when the Republicans are in the field. He’ll wear No. 7 from the Kansas City Royals.

Rep. Gregg Harper (Miss.)
First Base
Elected 2008
Home: Pearl
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

The freshman Congressman is making his debut in the Congressional game. In Congress, he replaced former Rep. Chip Pickering, who was a mainstay on the Republican squad. And like Pickering, he’ll wear the uniform of Mississippi State University, sporting No. 27 on his back.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (Calif.)
Pitcher
Elected 2008
Home: Alpine
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Republicans have high hopes for Hunter, who at age 32 is the youngest member of the squad and seems like a capable pitcher. He was serving in the military less than two years ago, so there’s no question he’s in great shape. He’ll be wearing San Diego Padres uniform No. 11.

Rep. Jack Kingston (Ga.)
Second Base
Elected 1992
Home: Savannah
Hits R | Throws R | Votes R

Kingston has been a valuable reserve the past few games. After wearing the uniform of the Savannah Chain Baseball Academy in 2008, he’ll represent a school in the opposite side of his expansive district this time, Valdosta State University, sporting
No. 18.

Schumer Advocates for Many on Panel

Nov. 16, 12 a.m.

As Senate Majority Leader, Lyndon Johnson once said of the Joint Economic Committee, “It’s as useless as tits on a bull.” But as that panel’s chairman during the 110th Congress, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) seized the opportunity to elevate the traditionally low-profile post to the forefront of shaping policy. Read Full Article
